Insurance – In blackjack, players can place an insurance bet on their initial bet if they think they have a blackjack. The bet pays 2:1 and is an unwise bet if a player does not know whether the dealer has a blackjack or not.
The dealer also has a hole card that is not visible to the player. This is why it is important to check your cards carefully, even when you have a blackjack.
Depending on the specific rules of the game, the house edge can be as high as 1%. This is a very significant disadvantage to players, but can be reduced by using basic strategy.
A hand with an ace and a 10 or face card is called a natural, or “blackjack.” It is the best possible hand and at most casinos it plays 3:2 against the dealer’s hand.
